The Life Of A Slave Girl By Harriet Jacobs And Frederick...
Realism creates an authentic image of daily endeavors, notably most if not all that slaves faced, and constructs a bridge that connects the gap between the readers to the slaves who are subjected to the endeavors and hardships as seen through autobiographies of many former slaves such as Harriet Jacobsââ¬â¢s and Frederick Douglassââ¬â¢s. Jacobsââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girlâ⬠and Douglassââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglassâ⬠both illustrate great examples of the obstacles and barriers that slaves had to overcome. The protagonists in both stories, Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass, are obviously not your everyday comic book superheroes who has their own hidden identities, rather, they are just ordinary commoners who are also facing real-life struggles like everybody else. Works of realism do not usually characterize their protagonists with romantic elements which often admired or idealized the protagonists, but rather portray their protagonists as an antihero. For instance, Jacobs was a slave who was often taken advantage of physically by her master. She begins to recall her masterââ¬â¢s wishes, ââ¬Å"Mr. Flint wished that I should sleep in the great house instead of the servantsââ¬â¢ quarters,â⬠(Jacobs, 407). Although Mr. Flint sounds like a caring and loving man, the idea contradicts the reality that Jacobs prefers to stay in the comfort and safety of the ââ¬Å"servantsââ¬â¢ quartersâ⬠rather than the ââ¬Å"great houseâ⬠of Mr. Flint. Essay about Analysis of The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela
Analysis of The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela In The Underdogs written by Mariano Azuela, we are introduced to a character that strongly symbolizes the fuel of the Mexican Revolution. Heroes like Demetrio Macias brought the Serranoââ¬â¢s hope of giving them what they felt they truly deserved. Although Demetrio Macias, the general (colonel) of a rebel army is hunting down the army of Pancho Villa, he seems to have the same ideals as the enemy. In addition to Demetrio Macias, we meet women like Camilla and War Paint who represent the different roles that women played during the Mexican Revolution. The character of Demetrio Macias proves to be quite ironic. One facet of his character reveals his determination to find Pancho Villaââ¬â¢s army,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Demetrio plays the man who is full of power, and desires women and alcohol. He is even interested in Luis Cervantesââ¬â¢ soon to be wife, when he drunkenly fights everyone to get what he wants. Demetrio is a man of power, and feels that he can achieve what he wants through force. The people that Demetrio represent are evident in the people that comprise his army, as well as the rare souls like Luis Cervantes. Cervantes, man who was well off to begin with, but later lost his fortune to the government. He quotes ââ¬Å"Before the revolution, I had my land all plowed, see, and just right for sowing, and if it hadnââ¬â¢t been for a little quarrel with Don Macio, the boss of my town, Moyahua, Iââ¬â¢d be there in a jiffy getting the oxen ready for the sowing, see?â⬠(pg. 48) Luis Cervantes explains his cause when he says ââ¬Å"The triumph of our cause, which is the sublime triumph of Justice, because our ideal-to be free the noble, long suffering people of Mexico-is about to be realized and because those men who have watered the earth with their blood and tears will reap the harvest which is rightfully theirs.â⬠(pg. 69) With respect to the degradation of women in The Underdogs, we must profile the two women portrayed in the book. On one hand we have the conservative Camilla, and on the other, we have War Paint. War Paint was the opposite of what society held as the typical woman. War Paint went against the grain, and partook in events which
Understanding and Managing Diversity
Question: Discuss about the Understanding and Managing Diversity. Answer: Introduction to Diversity Manoharan, Gross and Sardeshmukh (2013) describe diversity as a characteristic that identifies the differences that exist among members of a group which include visible factors like age, gender, race as well as ethnicity and it also includes invisible features like personality, education and lifestyle among other factors. Against this background, the focus of this paper is to discuss the relevance of gender as an important component of diversity to the tourism and hospitality industry. The paper starts by explaining the meaning of gender diversity and this is followed by outlining the relevance of gender to the tourism sector. The main body of the paper discusses the benefits and gains to businesses that embrace this form of diversity as well as the costs and consequences to those businesses that fail to account for this form of diversity. The last part outlines the measures that ought to be taken into account organizations in the tourism and hospitality industry to manage gender div ersity in their work practices. Gender Gender refers to the method that is used to make a distinction between male and female roles on the basis of societal expectations placed on each group (Robbins, 1993). The issue of gender has historically been associated with sexual orientation where the women were viewed as inferior to their male counterparts. Thus, gender inequality is viewed as the oldest and most common issue of diversity in different places (Shen et al, 2009).The historical role of women in particular has been associated with child caring and other household chores while men were viewed as the breadwinners in the family. However, various studies have suggested that apart from biological differences, there few if any other differences between men and women that can affect their job performance (Robbins, 2000). Women are increasingly being empowered in different scenarios to perform various tasks that were often viewed as a preserve for their male counterparts. Relevance of Gender Diversity to the Tourism and hospitality Industry Schanzel and Yeoman (2015) suggest that the continuing change in gender roles and parenting behaviour have significantly influenced family holiday experiences in different situations. It can be seen that both mothers and fathers are increasingly embracing the notion of gender equality that is characterised by shared responsibility. Traditional roles of women related to weekend shopping with kids are also increasingly being challenged as they also actively participate in other leisure related activities. Research has shown that females represent the fastest growing demographic group that now actively participates and demand leisure activities in sectors that were previously viewed as male dominated (Schanzel and Yeoman, 2015). Women were often expected to stay at home caring for the children while men would frequent various leisure destinations. The rate of family travel is also predicted to grow faster than all other types of leisure travel mainly because it is viewed as the best way of reuniting members of the family away from other demanding tasks of work (Schanzel and Yeoman, 2015). Female participation in the tourism sector is also gaining prominence in the tourism and hospitality sector. On the other hand, both blended families and those comprising of single parents are increasingly seeking travel destinations that offer them relaxation environments. As a consequence, it can be seen that the tourism sector should embrace the aspect of gender diversity in their operations so as to be able to cater for the needs of diversified genders not males alone as was previously the case in some instances. Benefits of managing Demographic Diversity in the Organization It is imperative for the organizations that operate in the tourism industry to adopt demographic diversity in their workforce. According to Jackson and Schuler (2010), demographic diversity reflects the degree and mix of characteristics such as age, sex, race as well as nation of origin. However, in this case focus is on gender whereby it can be seen that companies that operate in the tourism industry ought to create gender balance in their workforce so that they can be capable to cater for the needs and tastes of all tourists who may visit their places at any given time. There are certain issues that may be of interest to the tourists but are gender specific. For instance, pregnant mothers have special needs that ought to be catered for since they also have a right to enjoy leisure in different tourist destinations. This means that the right person should fill that position in order to help the company to attract the visitors who may be particular about gender related issues. Managing diversity is a very important component of management during the contemporary period since this helps to create a harassment free environment in the workplace where the employees also feel respected. There are quite a number of benefits that can be derived from managing diversity. For instance, managing gender diversity is beneficial in that it promotes creativity, productivity as well as morale among the people in a particular setup (Amayilah, 2015). Organizations that promote gender diversity are in a better position to appeal to the interests of the employees since they are motivated by sense of belonging to the company that is created among them. Motivation in the workplace also helps to improve productivity in the company. Employees who work in the tourism sector can put optimum performance if they are satisfied by their working conditions which in turn help to attract more visitors if they are happy about the quality of services they get from the company. The other issue is that managing diversity in the organization helps to promote employee engagement which is very important creating unity among the employees while at the same time minimizing chances of conflicts which can affect their performance (Skalsky and McCarthy, 2009). Equality and fairness are also promoted in the organization if the management prioritizes the aspect of gender diversity in their operations. When both men and women are treated as equal, they are likely to improve their performance since they are all treated as important not just mere workers. Diversity management is also beneficial in that it helps the organization to be responsive to social and demographic changes (Amayilah, 2015). In order for the company to be in a better position to keep pace with these changes, it should adopt a policy framework that promotes gender diversity so that it can cater for the needs of all the stakeholders. Costs and Consequences of to manage Diversity Improper management of diversity can negatively impact on the operations of the organization (Bergen, 2002). For instance, morale among the employees can be negatively affected which in turn affects their performance. Employee relations in the organization also suffer a great deal as a result of the fact that conflicts are likely to be witnessed. These are counterproductive since the company operating in the tourism sector can end up failing to attract customers as a result of the poor customer service they will be getting from the firm. The other issue is that organizations that fail to handle gender issue properly are likely to witness staff turnover since the employees will be demotivated. This is costly to the organization since it may fail to attract as well as to retain talented employees who can positively contribute to its overall performance. Measures that can be taken by Business to Improve their Position on Diversity Diversity management is a virtue in any business since it can be noted that workforces in different businesses are increasingly being characterised by people from diverse backgrounds. It important for organizations that operate in the tourism sector to put measures that are meant to promote gender equality between men and women so that they can positively contribute towards iproved productivity as well as overall performance of the organization as a whole. Amaliya (2015) posits that gender equity in the workplace significantly contributes to increased morale among the employees which is beneficial to the company. This also means that the quality of customer service is greatly improved. This in turn helps to attract many tourists to the company. Overall, proper management of gender diversity helps the company to gain competitive advantage since the tourists in particular are satisfied by the quality of service they get from the company rather than the service itself. Conclusion Over and above, it can be seen that the concept of diversity encompasses different factors that differentiate individuals from each other. As discussed above, gender is one of the major components of diversity and is topical in different organizational settings. Gender has been historically used to suppress women in various aspects of life in male dominated societies. However, this trend is changing as women are also increasingly being empowered to perform other tasks that were previously viewed as a preserve for the males. Like any other industry, the tourism sector affected by issues related to gender which calls for the actors in this sector to carefully manage gender diversity in order to improve their operations. To What Extent Did the Plo Represent a Shift in Terrorist Activity free essay sample
Firstly, it was the first hijacking where its purpose was not to divert the plane but to make a bold political statement. El Al was Israelââ¬â¢s national airline and was a symbol of the Israeli state. The hijacking also the forced the state to directly deal with the terrorists. Second, the hijacking influenced people on an international scale. The fact that the terrorists were intending to trade hostages for imprisoned Palestinian terrorists in Israel was shocking to the wider audience watching this. In addition, it was the first time a terrorist organization began operating regularly at the international level, leaving its home turf to attack citizens of a foreign country who, in many cases, had nothing to do with their struggle in order to promote their political cause before an international audience. Finally though the combination of dramatic political statement, symbolic targeting and crisis induced de facto recognition, the terrorists recognized they had the power to create major media events. We will write a custom essay sample on To What Extent Did the Plo Represent a Shift in Terrorist Activity? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This was significant in that they realized media attention meant power. This was the first time they were being heard by the world and that their cause was being sympathized with, which was a great stepping stone for resolving their problems. ââ¬Å"When we hijack a plane it has more it has more effect than if we killed a hundred Israelis in battle,â⬠. This encouraged other terrorist groups such as the ASALA, the JCAG and left-wing groups such as the German Red Army Faction to ââ¬Å"internationalizeâ⬠their political struggles. This showed the shift in terrorism from older previous terrorist groups. Terrorist groups such as the Peopleââ¬â¢s will acted on ââ¬Å"propaganda by deedâ⬠and thought committing acts of tyrannacide would attract public attention and ultimately weaken the state giving them a chance to attack. This was not so much different from the PLOââ¬â¢s actions in that they also wanted attention to their cause showing the process of a slow evolution of terrorism. By killing the head of state the media would attract people and spread propaganda, similar to the objectives of the PLO. However, the difference between the two terrorist groups was the PLO realized involving random innocent parties would infringe more terror upon the people thus causing a psychological effect where the individual has his own safety on mind as well as the terrorist group. The first several hijackings accomplished more for our cause than twenty years of pleading at the UN. This illustrated that involving innocent people had caused the world to awake and this turning point gave terrorism an international stage. Terrorism had evolved such that modern day terror was influenced by the likes of the IRA and FLN. The Irish nationalist cause through many years of violence against their British colonizers was finally recognized and they were given their independence through acts of destruction as well as political recognition later on something the PLO also followed which suggests a process of evolution was happening. The primary tactics used by the FLN, IRA and PLO were similar in that they involved hijackings, kidnappings, and embassy raids with the intention to obtaining publicity. Although the PLO used slightly different tactics in that they gained ransoms and imprisoned political figures of power exchanged for hostages; which is a prime example of the evolution of terrorism. Such terrorists blackmail forced governments to respond accordingly. While acts of terrorism at this time killed relatively few people, such publicity stunts put tremendous pressure on governments to respond responsibly since a wrong decision during a hostage crisis could have disastrous consequences and the blame was likely to land on the government. An example of this was the German response to the attack on Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich on September 5, 1972: eleven Israeli athletes (and eight members of the Palestinian Black September) were killed after a hostage standoff that ended in a shootout. While the West German government was not the primary target of the attack, the scene of crime was on German soil and the government was forced to act. This was an eye-opener as not only Germany but many other governments realized how insufficient their response capabilities were. . This clearly shows that terrorism was a process of evolution because previously groups such as the Peopleââ¬â¢s will and the IRA were less likely to involve innocent citizens, whereas more recent terrorist groups were more willing. They saw the deaths of innocent civilians as martyrs in their cause. Although terrorism was a process of evolution there were differences that showed a shift in terrorism an example would be the IRA was given weapons and money to assist in their struggle. Independently wealthy individuals could also provide them with support. With the terrorists need for support, terrorism became a completely political effort and therefore it became a tool for political means. In this case media coverage may have been helpful in their success, but it was not needed as much as the raw resources required for warfare. The media would instead have its uses in recruitment and was more essential for groups like the PLO which suggests a radical shift in terrorism. It is clear from past events the year 1968 was in fact a watershed year but we cannot dismiss the fact that there are many similarities between previous terrorist groups and the PLO which shows evidently there is an evolution of terrorism. The PLO was influenced by groups like the FLN and IRA in that they shared similar tactics but the process of evolution had transformed the speed and ease of publicity. An example would be technological advances which made it easier for people to be aware of major terrorist activity. It is clear that the hijacking of 1968 enlightened many terrorist groups of pivotal factors in succeeding in objectives; such as creating major media events, symbolic targeting and international attention. This in turn influenced groups such as JACG and ASLA, which shows the importance of 1968 and the shift it caused in terrorist activity.

Traditional Chinese marriages.
Traditional Chinese marriages. Ember (2002, p.343) defines marriage as "a socially approved sexual and economic union, usually between a woman and a man". Because marriage customs differ widely according to culture, it is obviously of great interest to the cultural anthropologist. For example, marriage rites in some cultures may involve highly complex ceremonial rituals, whereas marriage rites in other cultures may be relatively simple. The Chinese (in this essay, meaning native inhabitants of China) seem to have an affinity for elaborate rituals; like other Chinese celebrations, a traditional Chinese marriage involves several elaborate rituals, some of which are performed before the actual wedding day. This essay will examine each part of the wedding from the perspective of a particular Chinese subculture.'Visiting girls' is a courtship ritual practiced by the Dai ethnic group that typically takes place during the agricultural slack season (An Liu, 2002). Biblical Quotes In Tess Of The D
# 8217 ; ubervilles Essay, Research Paper Biblical Quotation marks in Tess of the D # 8217 ; Ubervilles Thomas Hardy # 8217 ; s Tess of the D # 8217 ; Ubervilles portrays the romantic battles of Tess Durbyfield with nature and other unmanageable fortunes. Hardy crafts his novel with legion Biblical quotation marks and allusions. As a self-proclaimed atheist, Hardy manipulates Biblical quotes out of their intended context in the Bible for his ain significance and consequence. Although Hardy is an atheist, he is erudite in the Bible and its instructions. This is really apparent in his book with 63 documented Biblical quotation marks and allusions. Hardy most commonly uses the quotation marks in idiomatic phrases and as similes or metaphors to break depict a character or state of affairs in the original Biblical context, but he besides abuses Biblical quotation marks. Job 42: 5-6 provinces, # 8220 ; I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now my oculus sees thee ; hence I despise myself, and repent in dust and as hes. # 8221 ; In the Biblical context, to # 8220 ; repent in dust and ashes # 8221 ; means to atone with your whole being, which is made of dust and ashes. Hardy reveals Tess # 8217 ; s ideas about Alec: # 8220 ; Hate him she did non rather, but he was dust and ashes to her, and even for her name # 8217 ; s sake she barely wished to get married him # 8221 ; ( 80 ) . Hardy manipulates the Biblical significance and creates his ain significance for # 8220 ; dust and ashes. # 8221 ; Hardy # 8217 ; s definition implies that dust and ashes are scum and humble objects of no desire to Tess. Hardy exploits a Biblical quotation mark intended to intend every fibre of one # 8217 ; s being into the offal of Tess # 8217 ; s desire. Hardy besides eliminates the original purpose of Phillipians 4: 8-9: # 8221 ; Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honest, whatever is merely, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anythi ng worthy of congratulations, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do. # 8221 ; The adjectives Jesus references exemplify the highest qualities of adult male and should remind Christians of the lone perfect homo, Jesus. In Tess of T he Dââ¬â¢Ubervilles, Angel describes Tess as ââ¬Å"being numbered among those who are true, honest, and merely, and pure, and lovely, and of good reportâ⬠( 192 ) . Hardyââ¬â¢s citation of the Bible is misdirecting and hypocritical of Tessââ¬â¢ true character. Tellurium was non pure, true, or merely. Tess loses her virginity before she is married and has a kid out of marriage. Tess besides commits slaying, withstanding one of the 10 commandments God set before adult male. The purpose of Hardyââ¬â¢s citation is non to touch to Tess as a Christ figure but instead to qualify Tess as the heroine, who Hardy adored, and demo Angelââ¬â¢s love for Tess. In a continuance of Hardyââ¬â¢s tendency, he molds another Biblical quotation mark into his ain context when he refers to Tessââ¬â¢ character. Hardyââ¬â¢s cagey handling of the different quotesââ¬â¢ original Biblical context establishes Tessââ¬â¢ character with an added genius and singularity. In Matthew 5: 44 ââ¬â 45, Jesus says, # 8220 ; But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be boies of your Father who is in Eden ; for he makes the sun rise on the immorality and the good, and sends rain on the merely and unjust. # 8221 ; This quotation mark refers to God # 8217 ; s blind love for everyone no affair if they are Christians or non. God does non seek wrath on evildoers, but instead he treats everyone every bit. Tellurium expresses that she would non # 8220 ; mind larning why # 8211 ; why the Sun does reflect on the merely and unfair alike # 8221 ; ( 125 ) . Tess # 8217 ; rhetorical ailment is precisely that and no more. God # 8217 ; s unconditioned love is non the point of Tess # 8217 ; duologue. Tess complains vocally that she feels life is non just. Hardy # 8217 ; s deceptive quotation mark shows Tess # 8217 ; ignorance of life # 8217 ; s unfairness, and she does non acknowledge that the original context of the quotation mark is to demo God # 821 7 ; s love. Hardy does non misapply Biblical quotation marks to turn out a point or raise inquiries from an atheist # 8217 ; s point of position. Hardy simply quotes the Bible out of context for word picture and dramatic consequence, giving new definitions to Biblical phrases that had antecedently been understood to connote other significances.

Cyber Security Information Technology Research Paper
Cyber Security Information Technology - Research Paper Example Their motives are divergent, with some being political while others are just for malicious purposes. This has prompted various government and security agencies to intervene in order to rescue the situation. This paper will analyze cyber security, those likely to be involved in network hacking and the role of the government in protecting infrastructures vulnerable to cyber attacks. Difference between information assurance and cyber security There is a distinct difference between information assurance and cyber security. On one hand, information assurance entails putting in place measures that protect information and information systems, which ensures their availability, reliability, non-repudiation and discretion (Westfall, 2011). The information may either be electronic or general information within an organization. While dealing with electronic information, the system must be able to address the confidentiality concerns, by either introducing passwords or physically protecting the h ardware. Likewise, the information system must be in a position to monitor all the information and direct it to the legitimate users (The national Technical Authority for Information Assurance, 2011). Broadly, information assurance aims at ensuring that information moves to the right person at the right time and place. On the other hand, cyber security involves the effort of the organization or individuals to protect valuable information through preventing, detecting and even responding to prevailing threats. In cyber security, most of the attacks are online, since the process involves the use of the internet, although physical safety is necessary due to the protection of hardware involved in the transmission of information. Some of the threats involved are more serious, although this is subject to the ability of the organization to deal with them (McDowell & Householder, 2009). There are two broad categories of cyber attacks. One is when an attacker studies the security of the syst em and develops malicious programs to destroy the servers. The other attack is the zero-day attack, in which case the attacker bombards the system even before implementing the security measures (Fujiwara, 2006). Potential hackers and their motives Hackers have varied reasons for hacking into a cyber network. It is important to note that anyone can qualify to be a hacker, as long as there is an intention to access private information without permission. The leading cyber threat involves the financial sector, in which case the hackers engage in a number of ways. The first case is account takeover whereby criminals exploit financial and online systems, taking over the functions of the account holders. The aim of this crime is to pose as the legitimate owner, as this gives the criminals access to the accounts. Eventually, the criminals transfer all the cash to their accounts or withdraw the cash for their personal use.
